Illegal MLS Data Distribution
Any unauthorized use, repurposing or distribution is a major violation of MLS rules and policies, as well as potentially harmful to the communities it serves.
Subscribers may be tempted to re-sell data or generally provide a commercial company with the MLS listing information as a source for business leads or other purposes.
While this may seem to be a “victimless” or even entitled practice, it is neither.
MLS information is protected content with a specific use and audience which has oversight and accountability. Distributing the data in an unauthorized manner breaks the chain of custody and creates issues, including additional risk and increased potential for problems.
The penalties for unauthorized data distribution can be severe: up to $15,000 in fines and expulsion from the MLS.
The MLS rules allow direct access to the compilation, as well as for a variety of broker office data feeds and IDX Internet use and display and distribution for all their bona fide clients.
Any other use or purpose is prohibited and should therefore be immediately stopped.
